50-90 Farmingdale - Don McDowell - 10-09-2013
Doc show'ld up with a huge grin on his face , a draggin his old sheepskin rifle case under on arm.
When he drags the thing out its a #1 in 50-2.5 with the old vernier rear sight and a globe with post front. Barrel must be a 34 or longer. No barrel sight. All in pristine condition.
Says he's got about 60 brass that came in the deal.
So now we need some charge and bullet suggestions, and of course if there's any 50 shooters with an extra handful of bullets for him to try that would be much appreciated.
We have Cartridge , Goex 1f, KIK 1.5 and 2f, Olde E 1.5 and 2, some schuetzen and maybe 1 can of Swiss 2f.
So lets hear from the big 50 boys.

Don with a Farmingdale it is usually a freebore involved,measure it and quantify it. Freebore usually entails patch to groove for best results , no freebore patch to bore works best. Probably bullets under 600 grs for use in a 1 in 36 twist too. bobw

Yessir, it's a farmer, and you can clearly see the freebore from the breech.
But the smile on his face so soon after his loosing Edie is worth the cost of a new Shiloh and then some.
Looking forward to getting this thing running for him.

mine is a 1-36 with no freebore in it, but the chamber is very generous, I size with a 50-70 die and use 100 gns of 1F ,compress a 473 gn pp bullet on top of 3/16ths of grease and go to town ,
is he interested in patching or does he want to shoot greasers. let me know and I will see what I got laying around,

Dean if you got some of each he'll be mucho happy to get them, especially from you, and if you happen to have a patch template of some sort hangin around...
He's got that little dab of brass, so if we can just get something to stuff in the cases to make the thing go bang and ring a gong (or an antelopes bell) you know him he'll be like a little kid at Christmas.
I'm afraid this rifle is gonna cost me a trip to the Quigley..

My 74 Gemmer is a Farmingdale with the slow twist and the freebore at the throat. That is the rifle I use with the .510-500PP bullet from NEI, the one where the nose of the bullet comes back to a full diameter of .510" then "steps down" for the shank which receives the paper patch. That full diameter nose was intended to protect the forward edge of the patch when the bullet entered the rifling with its rather steep leade. I'd be glad to cast of few of those and send them for a try in that rifle. Just let me know. Shoot sharp, Mike

Mike I have one of those old NEI ppb molds for the 40 cal I would sell ,send me a pm if you are Interested.
DON I have a few different types of 50 cal ppb's around here and could send some card wads also. Need your snail mail addy though. bobw
