Got to thinking about this in the Vortex scope discussion on the Shiloh board.
Over the course of time one thing I've come to notice is how many folks mistake a low hit ( miss on a steel target) at say 5 or 7 oclock as a need to make a big windage adjustment.Have seen many make the same mistake on diamond shaped gongs as well. But what it actually requires first is an elevation adjustment, then see if /how much wind is needed to get into the x ring. Often times a couple minutes elevation will be a ten ring, then touch the wind to the x ring.
Also folks over estimate in their minds how many minutes from one score ring to the next. Often times forgetting that just the bullet diameter of a 45, will occupy 1/2 minute at 100 yds, and a 1/4 at 2.
A little goes a long way, when making sight adjusts.

Don I agree,
yet have also seen folks make a clean miss off the side of a Creedmoor target say at 3 and give only a min of left? when it takes 4 MOA to reach center. A correct elevation is a must.

Good point Kurt, I watched folks chasing individual shots and wondered if they had figured group size before cranking on the dials..

Kurt you make a huge valid point.
The other: a proper Mech Zero and No Wind zero. Most folks that come to my match dont have a frigging clue to that and are already way behind the ball on that.

I felt real bad when Butch's front sight fell out during the prep period on the last day at 900, with those screwball conditions throwing brakelights up and down the target pits, and then to not have a clue as to where true zero might be? Lordy, but he came back and did pretty well, but we barely had enough time to get the sighters and score shots in.

Yup really sucks when that happens
Almost as bad as when the conditions will make a full minute elevation change jump off the target, and you go to make a touch adjustment, loosen the eye cup and the slide drops 10 points.
Good thing nobody tried to tell me what a good sight that is supposed to be for about 30 minutes until I got myself cool and collected.
