Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Don McDowell - 01-30-2014 Since reading the equipment list in Perry's book and noticing the number of shooters either shooting Hyde's based long pointed bullets or Hepburn based long pointed bullets I have been on a search to find those bullets. So far I have not been able to scare up an exact description or drawing, but I have found some inferences that may give us a good idea. But for now I'm going to say that those bullets are going to be quite similar to current Money bullets or the modified money bullet profile that BACO offers. The old Metford bullet is probably quite a bit along those lines.. But the search continues.... RE: Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Lumpy Grits - 02-04-2014 Don, if you find any pictures of those bullets, I sure would like to see them. Gary RE: Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Don McDowell - 02-04-2014 So far no luck with pictures or drawings, but from descriptions in various places they are going to look a lot like this one [attachment=268] RE: Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Kurt - 02-04-2014 Brent has a photo of a original Sharps long range bullet on his website. http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jessie/PPB/PPB.htm Looking at all of the sharps, metford, Gibbs they are all pritty close. Buffalo Arms has a new bullet that is Identical to what Brent has on his website. Your picture of your bullet looks a lot like the Metford Jim and I worked on back in 08 when he started making moulds. I think I still have the drawings on backup and the mould is a two hole guide pin mould. I had him make one for the .442 and .492 for the 50. RE: Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Don McDowell - 02-04-2014 Kurt as near as I can tell that bullet from the BACO mould is awfully close to the "long nosed" bullets used by the late end of the Creedmoor shooters. So I'ld say you done good.
RE: Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Kurt - 02-04-2014 I never really liked either the .45 or the .50 mould not because of the bullet profile but I didn't make the diameter wide enough for my liking. They are .008" under bore and I like to patch mine at .003 over bore diameter and that would mean using thicker paper. I now have a .445 Metford swage die that I swage .500 grain bullets for the .45-70 and it is doing very good. Waiting for some long range shooting in a few months to see how it holds together. RE: Thoughts on the Creedmoor bullets of old - Don McDowell - 02-04-2014 This bullet has shot great for me right from the get go, but I had the diameter bumped up so that it's patched just at or above bore diameter. I'ld like to have it in a nosepour adjustable.. |
