#3 shoots so well - Don McDowell - 05-27-2014
I'm thinking because of the choked bore Kirk put in this barrel. I new it was tight but wasn't really aware of how tight until I tried to put the Crossno 22 liner in it. Lacked about the length of the case of getting it seated, and when I pulled it out the rifling had engraved the muzzle of the liner real well, and scored the first knob..
Can't use it for double duty as a 22 but dang it shoots patched bullets really really well.

My last Shiloh is a #3 in .40-65 and it has noticeably more choke in it than my other two Shiloh's. I can easily feel it with a cleaning patch. It's also my most accurate Shiloh.

Right now I don't know if there's a better bpcr barrel than a Shiloh made barrel.

You might be right Don. I wonder if they've changed their process a bit in the last while, as my .40-65 definitely has more choke than my .45-70 and .45-110.
My most accurate rifles have Ron Smith barrels on them, but then they are smaller cartridges ( .32-40 and .38-50 ) and are for shooting from the bench so it's not a fair comparison at all.
If I could try any combination, I'd like to see what a Ron Smith gain twist bull barrel would shoot like on a Sharps with a traditional cartridge. Paper patched of course. Bartlein will now make gain twist barrels too BTW.
With that said, my new Shiloh is my most accurate BPCR legal rifle at most silhouette distances ( I say most because I think my .45-70 PP rifle has the edge at 500m ).

If I was into sillouette I think the 44-77 is absolutely the cartridge for it. That 1.1 inch bullet zipping out at 1370 would surely send rams flying off the rail, and the accuracy is certainly there, coupled with mild recoil.. Don't know what else a person could want. Altho have a C Sharps chambered in the 44-70 straight might be a good rig, cheap brass, etc..

Don, that is my thinking also, that the 44-77 will make a very good silhouette cartridge, but, I have read some place and I can't remember where that there can be some problems around the 300 meter line with the bullet becoming unstable as it goes through the transonic transition. I dont' know if you or perhaps someone else on this board could she some light on this for me or not.
I guess the worse thing one would have to do would be to go to a heaver bullet and coarser powder to lower the speed some so that the transition point is well before the pig line so the bullet has time to re-stabilize.
All thoughts and opinions greatly appreciated.
