Taking a closer look

Taking a closer look
My hunting rifle (a 45/90 roller) doesn't see much action during the off-seasons. So I gathered-up some new cases to fireform. While fireforming some new Starline cases in the roller I also had a few loaded rounds usually fired in the Highwall rifle. All ammo had been FL sized. Bear with me.
The older ammo from the highwall would not chamber, without rotating the loaded round in the chamber to find a sweet spot where it would. Yet the new, unfired cases would chamber. Better have a look in that chamber.
Well, lookey here, on the sidewall of the chamber, near the front, was a very shiney flake of lead, apperently been there for awhile. Stuck very tightly . Yet this rifle shot MOA at 300 yds, and beyond.
So I wrapped a little 4-O steelwool on a length of wood dowel and polished it out, very shiney, and clean in there now.
Better have my glasses changed,
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

RE: Taking a closer look
Hey Ol' Jim, I hope you go back to the range for more shooting soon and then continue your report. Did removing that bit of lead cure the chambering problem? I'm interested because with my .44/77 sometimes a cartridge needs to be rotated, generally a 1/4 turn, to be chambered and I don't know why. That is with ammo which was fire-formed in the same rifle. It isn't a terrible problem but I am curious...
Shoot sharp, Mike

Mike check the bullet run out before forcing it in the chamber.

I don't index loaded ammo into the chamber, nor do I index the fired cases into the press shellholder.

I do slightly FL size all fired case and then neck-size using a Lyman 45-90 nk die. I use a std. Redding bullet-seater die.

My run-out usually is around 1/1000, checked by a RCBS run-out tool, and bullets are loaded to engrave about 0.030".

But don't tell nobody Rolleyes !

Idea Use a Lyman .45-110 full length size die, to just 'kiss' the .45-90 case OD all the way down.Wink
