The worst part of the 40-90 is forming cases. It definitely has a noticible recoil, but nothing any worse than the others.
40-70 is a good cartridge if you want a 40 with some zip to it.

if you want upper end 40 cal ballistics in a straight case, there are 2 choices.
no 1 is the 40/72, which can utilize 405 win brass.
these cases fireformed will hold 84 gns of swiss 1.0 or 1.5 powder droptubed, and a 0.060 wad.
just compress a little and finger seat a pp bullet, and you nearly have a 40/90.
add a fast twist and you can shoot 1.5" long bullets at 1300+ fps and mix it with the 45s at 1000 yds.
if you want more try choice no 2.
run a baco 40 cal expander into 9.3 x 74 brass and make 40/85 ballard .
this will mix it with the 40/90 sbn on a level playing field.
should easily hold 90 gns.

Wild Bill 40-90 BN Click for video

A video of my good buddy Wild Bill using his 40-90 BN on a buff hunt with me. 350 gr Hoch concave base paper patched to groove. This combo gets to target quicker than any BPCR combo I have shot to date. He used the same bullet in another gun for a one shot kill as well here. I have used the same bullet in my 40-65 for a one shot kill on a cow buff and deer as well. Very accurate. Having said all that my favorite buff rifle is the 2 -7/8 with a 550 gr PP bullet. As I always told clients it is not what you shoot them with but where you hit them that counts. Have seen a yearling buff continue to walk seemingly unaffected after 2 shots in the lungs from a 416 Rigby at 80 yards............Had another client use a 40-70 Straight on buff for a one shot kill.........don't totally discount those .40's

Wild Bill had a problem with his cases sticking and I told him to try turning the necks slightly. He did and said it cured the problem.

My .44-90bn shoots faster then the .44-100 st using the same powder charge and bullet. The neck restriction has a lot to do with that I think.

Bruce I used the 9.3X74 cases for my .40-70 when I first got it. It's a little big at the base but it could be swaged down and worked well. A lot more consistent then the stretched 30/40 cases, but a pain in the neck to make them fit.

The chamber I want to change is a .40-65 and the 9.3x74 cases wont work for this project. I don't want to rechamber the .40-65 to increase the velocity I just want the .40-90 bn caliber to add to my other rifles that nobody wants

I would agree with that, also the part about a little more recoil as well.

If I were looking for a long range .40 target rifle, I would built a .40-82 WCF. I believe that you will find some on the firing line at long range matches. The only person other than my wife to use a .40-90 SBN for Creedmoor that I know of is Dan T. He tried one for a while and came to the same conclusions that I did from what he wrote about it. I replaced the .40-90 barrel with a .45-2.6SS and she liked it much more.
