trapdoor barrel repair
Hi ya'all I just picked up a trapdoor barrel and receiver off e-bay yesterday for $61.00 it is brand new never issued or shot after leaving the Springfield armory.
It is part of the new guns un-crated to be sold off and the gov. folks thought it was a bad idea to sell to the common folks operating firearms so they took an acetalene torch and damaged the mouth of the chamber to make un usable. I will have to evaluate it after receiving it but the picture shows it to no badly damaged? I hope. Has anyone here or knows someone who has dealt with one of these and repaired it? I am thing to sleeve the chamber or weld it up and re machine. Really want to fix it as it is new perfect lands and groove's can't ask for anything better than that? Help!

RE: trapdoor barrel repair
If they didn't cut the action itself , rebarreling might be the best bet. Sleeving that old barrel it would always have the weak spot of the cut.

RE: trapdoor barrel repair
Up date on the trapdoor barrel I received it today and this thing is gorgeous. If none of you have seen a brand new Springfield 45-70 barrel it's beautiful the bluing is perfect and the receiver is a even medium black color all over. The bore is shinny smooth no marks what so ever.
I believe this barrel/receiver was never built as as a rifle as there not marks showing it was ever in a stock there is no tang and no scrape or witness marks indicating there ever was one. Also no front sight blade or pin. It is as though it came out of the armory having never been used.
The damage is confined to the first 3/8" of the mouth of the chamber there still is part of the land for the case rim on one side and it was burned away on the left side and bottom the metal removal does not get into the receiver it self. Will need to weld up the worse part and make a sleev to repair the rest will only need to sleeve the first 1/2" to 5/8" of the chamber and wa la brand new trapdoor barrel. Who ever gets one of those?Big Grin
