Good reading

RE: Good reading
Over the past few days, I have found time, during the down-pouring rain, to read "The Time Of The Buffalo", by Tom McHugh. Three hundred and forty some pages about the life and times of the shaggys during the 1860s thru the end of days during the 1870s. Much was written about indian impact on the herds before the cartridge guns and some notes of the guns.
Rather dull at times, as not much detail about the rifles or how the loads were worked-up in the field during that time.
And yes there were pictures for me to see, LOL!

Old Jim
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

RE: Good reading
kurt,
thank you for the link to "modern american rifles" written in 1891.
this is of interest, as it was written about the end of the bpcr era and when smokeless was about to happen.
thus it was at the time of most development in bpcr.
an interesting quote from pp 289/290.
the author stated that for military and hunting use the gg bullet had generally supplanted the pp bullet but
"for target shooting with a match rifle,in most cases where fine shooting is done, the patched bullet is oreferred."
some of us know this to still be the case today.
a quote from p 278 illustrates how language has changed.
speaking of the tribulations that can be encountered by a new caster with a new mould
"a new bullet mould will often cause a good and calm man to ejaculate"
keep safe,
bruce.

Bruce there is a wealth of information in this library from before and after the transition of black to less smoke and cordite.
I just went to the links I posted above this book and I see that they don't work.
Here is a full catalog of a wealth of history. you might be interested in the Victorian time period of your Country in these 322,000 plus articles.
Lets see if this works. You don't have to log in to do a search or read the books.

RE: Good reading
thanks again kurt.
back to "modern american rifles".
where the author describes the chase patching system he refers to the "ball seater"
the picture clearly shows what is a breech seater.
in earlier times a ball seater was a tool to seat the bullet in a charged case to a certain depth, now referred to as a seating die.
without the picture we could be excused for thinking the latter.
of course a chase patched bullet could be loaded into a case, (backwards) as they were loaded thus in long range muzzle loaders with false muzzles.
either the false muzzle or the leade angle would press the paper onto the lead alloy enough to make it grip and slide into either the throat or the muzzle.
keep safe,
bruce.

RE: Good reading
Yes that is a breach seating tool. I have seen one like as one of the items in a Creedmoor rifle gun case with projectiles and loading tools at a collectors show.
Back in that time a cannelured or patched projectile was referred to as a ball.

So far as historical fiction aka Westerns I find Fred Grove to be pretty knowledgable on Sharps and the buffalo range in general. Any others?
