what a pain in the butt, casting and sizing 357 gc bullets is.. Then the Uberti 73 was very quick to remind me that keeping the coal to proper limits is very important...Big Grin

Don, I have the 73 Win/Miroku SRC in .357/38 Special, my least favorite lever rifle for no good reason other than I just don't care for the cartridge in a rifle, love the rifle, not the cartridge, for no good reason.Certainly weaker cartridges have been chambered in the 73 I like them better, for no good reason. The Win/Miroku is as sensitive to COAL as your Uberti, I got a bit to long cartridge locked up in the action and a heck of a time getting the screw out of the mag tube hanger to pull the spring.I think the 73 likes the semi bottle neck cartridges better and handles them better than any of the straight wall cartridges.

I have to ask why a G/C bullet ?

Hah! Many of us shooting 73’s, and the 76, have learned the hard way about COAL. Experience is an effective teacher. Glad I’m not the only one, misery loves company.

I'm thinking of selling/trading the .357/.38 for something else I should have held out for the 44-40. I have a 'Deluxe' 73 in 44-40 and it's just the cats meow. A 73 SRC in 44-40 would be nice for hunting.

Randy I'm using a gc bullet because that's the mould I have on hand. It was a good bullet in the Ruger that I had converted to 44 special, but the rounds that I still had left loaded for that gun won't cycle at all, but they do single feed very easily.
You might look at a short rifle in 44-40, I really like mine.
I keep bugging Winchester about bringing one out in 38-40 but so far haven't had any luck.

I been mulling on getting another lever rifle. I'm leaning towards a 73 in the .44-40 or a 76 in the .45-60.
Yesterday I went to the local gun shop to see what they had or the intend of ordering one and on the wall they had two 1893 Marlins, one in the .40-60 and a .38-55 what really what I been looking for for several years but these are not the quality I want. The .40 had a pretty dark bore but a hint of rifling left that might still grip a bullet and the wood had a couple cracks, but it was not a $800. dollar rifle.
The .38-55 had shine but rough spots in the bore but the outside metal still had some case left but it was not a $1000. rifle. This rifle for a 1893 was a little unusual chambered for a .38-55 with a 1888 type action with the top eject instead of the side square bolt of the 93's but I made an offer and told him to call if he wants to sell it.

Well Don, you want a .38-40. It's not a Winchester but a very nice Marlin. I like the Marlins better then the Winchesters because the ease of cleaning them from the breach end.

Kurt I don't think you could go wrong with the Winchester 73's in 44-40.
I have an 1889 Marlin in 38-40, but would still like one of the new Winchesters in 38wcf, but I don't think I'll hold my breath waiting for them to make one.Smile

Makes sense Don, Yes the SRC in 44-40 wcf I am becoming fan of the cartridge. I just chronographed a bunch of 38 & 40 grains O.E. 2F with 215 gr. Accurate mould bullet. Velocites were impressive should average 1500 fps =- from a 24' barrel accuracy has been fair with 38 grs. being a bit more accurate. The last string of 15 shots I tried to foul the barrel. One wet patch flipped over ran through again one more wet and squeaky clean, dry patch, some bear grease/beeswax done.

RE: Forgot
Randy I haven't chrono'ld anything out of this short rifle, but with the 205 gr bullet from the Lyman mould cast from 16-1 it sure shoots good with 35 grains of OE 2f or 12 grains of bludot. I got ahold of some 205 gr. jacketed bullets , going to play with them a little bit too.
