RE: Winchester 73
Jim,
That is what I would do, to get "close enough" reading so as to pick out the bullet diameter.

Of course, you could look up the angle of the "vee" block to use along with your mike and some calculations
to get a more exact reading of groove diameter.
The latter, I can't help you with short of sitting down with my lost scientific calculater and my old trig book

Arnie,
I’m a carpenter. It’s a miracle I can even read a micrometer!

Here you go, Wayne has several different ways to measure odd groove depths.

That .430 is terribly close to the .429 winchester has always used
So find a 205 gr bullet 430 diameter and have some memorable moments with that old darlin

The shim wrap method looks like the best way for a carpenter!

Jim,
I have a nice bullet for your Win '73. 429434. A 200 gr RNFNHP gas check.
It shoots well in my first year production Win 1892 rifle. In fact , I killed my second last buck with it.
I could provide some of them to get you going. Seems to me I use them sized and lubed to 0.430"
Also, may be able to come up with some 44-40 brass.
Are you going to be able to come down to Merrill for the Saturday Feb 12th Indoor/Outdoor .22LR long range gong match?

Arnie,
That would be great! I’ve done some trading and have a die set and some cases coming. I’d like to try things out with this rifle to see where I’m heading before getting too much invested.
I’d like to make your 22 match but won’t be able to commit until a later date. We’re dealing with a medical issue right now and need to be very careful about Covid. Don’t dare start coughing and break stitches!
