RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Ian,
It's tough taking an unknown sight setting at long range, especially if the grass is up and ground is wet. I been down that road.
When I go on line with an unknown setting estimate come ups from a known sight setting. In my case it's usually 200 yds.
I bracket my shots with the first on center and if nothing is seen I hold on the berm to find dust or dirt because I'm usually high coming up 12 or 14 from 200 the next shot I hold over
The reason a dog has so many friends is because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.
I had a brain fart at the 800 yard relay. I had my estimated 1000 yard setting in my sight and just never even gave it any thought. When my pit crew said they couldn’t hear my bullets I thought they were way short and kept coming up. Hard to say where those bullets went but after that things went ok. The relay that was postponed finished their relay. The last two 1000 yard events were canceled. My 38 did have the highest score for 1000 yards so that is very encouraging. We will have another long range match in September. 5 relays at 1000 and in October we will shoot 1200 yards so that should be very interesting.

That's what I wanted to hear about the .38-50 making the 1K line especially with a 86
Any idea what the wind was up to ?
Ian, were you using irons or scope?
and if you can, what was your settings from the 200 yard setting?
If I can make Harris this fall it will help getting me in the ballpark with out going over the fence.

I was shooting irons. Winds weren’t bad. They are usually much worse there at Atterbury. They were in the 10mph range in my estimation. It was mostly a wind from 90 degrees out there with a head wind on the line. A head wind that would pick up and die off. The wind on the range would blow towards us at times also. I don’t have a 200 yard setting but I do have a 200 meter setting and the 1000 yard number is 118 min higher than the 200 meter setting. This is with a 32” barrel.

I just got a new lot of Swiss 1.5 powder and it has a different density than the last lot and accuracy has not been good with the ladder loads I been shooting.
These last couple days the winds were very mild 2-5 mph so it was a good days to test loads.
The first target has what I been seeing and I been trying different primers and a few other things to get the ground to stay less than the 3-3/4 black target at 200 yards.
I been using a hard alloy I mixed up for this 371-359 EDDPP bullet that comes in at .70 on the LEE lead hardness tester.
Last night I loaded another Ladder load but I went back to my softer alloy that is a mix of 18# lead with a 1# roll of 95/5 no lead solder (95% tin/5% antimony) that runs .80 on the LEE scale.
The first target is the hard alloy and target 2 and3 is the softer alloy all three targets were fired with the same primers/powder and seated the same and the groups shrunk considerably with the soft alloy.
Also I tested 2 5 shot loads of 62 and 63 grains of 1.5 swiss and the captech cases shot a tighter group than the Winchester cases. the smallest group is 1-3/8" but further load tests coming with both brass.
Interesting results these last few days with this Hepburn wondering what was going on. It shot very well before and all of a sudden it died.
Kinda made me scratch my head wondering what was going on.

Ian,
I been testing this new lot of swiss and solar I have not come to an agreement with it., but it's starting to show promise.
The last couple trips to the range with ladder loads I settled on 62 gr with the 371-359 DD bullet.
I been going between the Winchester brass and Captech and the Captech brass has shown better results with the same loads, powder, primers, bullets cast the same session to eliminate variables as much as possible.
This morning I went out to fireform some more Captech cases and I loaded loads again with both win and Cap brass all identical with componants and look at the difference in groups.
Winds were down that the cotton wood tree leaves were still so no wind effects.
Quite a bit difference between the two groups. The left target was shot using the cap tech and the right with Winchester and all brass has been shot several times so it fits the chamber but the vertical with the Win brass is way too much.
I ordered 300 more cases so I have 500 that will last me.
