Paper Patch Cutting toolset-with photos

RE: Paper Patch Cutting toolset-with photos
Nice hint, didn´t expect such interest. But got also some PM, so checking shipping possibilities over the pond. Not much fun being from europistan. But seems I´m getting the shippers down to reasonable levels.
Sure would like to make more, making them was fun and having reason to make several in small serie would be nice, albeit I´m on hand tools only regarding this. Only downside with the wood I have on hand is its hardness (OK from the machining point, as I´m avid hardwood guy), but it takes forever to make it sip some tung oil or even ironing beewax into it. Have a "serving plank" from it for decent eating when on trip somewhere (not on foot, as due to 3+ lbs weight), about 10"x12"-took over 3 hours ironing the beewax into it. By 2 HP electric iron like the one used for ironing shirts, no sisy toy.

RE: Paper Patch Cutting toolset-with photos
OK guys, I just hope the folowing won´t be taken as an unlawful advertisement and/or breaking the rules here. But probably have no other chance how to say the folowing, so if found unacceptable here, please move this and/or let me know to find other place to play.

Getting pokes here as well as by other means from this forum, I will pick the glove and will go for it, at least from the wood I have on hand-will check for how many sets is it worth, as I got some of it stolen (finished parts of my wagoon box, ready to assembly included...).
Checking posibilities of shipping since I´m from europistan, as well as getting more wood. The wood will take some time, about three weeks. Almost for sure, the next one will be of some other kind, but will try hard to be it some of the dark coloured kind. If someone would be interested in light coloured one, let me know.
Also, since the wood are pieces from sliced veneer mfg, the back side has some flaws from retaining pins. They are not of even thickness, as well as level in crossection. The cutting lane is OK, no bumps there, but realy it´s not a square plank. About 1/32-1/25" of thickness variation from back to front is not uncomon. Planing it even is a no-go option, tried it half day on +/- $110 000 variable speed planer with several knive sets some years ago-no way when dry, maybe when soaking wet from two weeks in steam furnace. Horrible grain tearing and cracking from vibrations, as it has some waves and stripes in grain all over and through. I´m happy I can plane it by extra sharpened hand plane on the edges.
I´m on hand tolls only, so the slots are cut with jewelers saw and I´m no master of it, so regardless some file and sanding work, you can stick as much as three or four papers between the slot wall and the leading/retaining bolt boss in some positions and transitions from the paralel part to round ends are way not uniform. Will post a photo for those interested if they find it acceptable, albeit I will try to make it all even and not abusive for eye. If it happens that more folks will be interested, I´ll have to tool up at least to some degree, but even after that there´ll be a lot of pure hand fiddling, so every each piece will show different course and process of work and worksmanship-it´s a must due to wood properties, which are quite strange even in comparison with curled mahagony. Hope to retain the worksmanship level constant or rising Wink
Along the wood (which is quite crucial, as from my point of view it would loose quite a lot of charm if made from plywood), I´ll need some time to sort it all out. As an self-employed, I have only quite late evenings to start with, so please bear with me. But surely will try as not to make it over 150 buck deal, because with shipping included it would loose most of the appeal seems to me. If you consider it too low and will do so even after flaw report, please let me know Big Grin A group buy would help shipping costs alot. Also, will do hard to make them delivered by begining of the match season, at least those first ones.

RE: Paper Patch Cutting toolset-with photos
Thank You Don, would never thought that I´ll have such highliht...
Will post here what is posted to the special thread also:

OK, I promised to photograph the wood flaws, so here they are:

Dimples from retaining pins on the back:

About 1/25" wide, about 1/32 or less deep. They will be probably always present on the back side, as well as undersides of the sliders. Nothing to do about them, as my pieces of wood has curls and waves-probably the reason it ended up as a veneer, not as slabs. Planing impossible, sanding it down way beyond tooling.

Somehow uneven thickness, but I must say that this was probably the worst piece of what I currently have. Even if present, will be used in such a way as in no way compromise the functionality of the tool:

Mentioned less than perfect slots from my point of view, so here you see what you can expect-at worst, since I´ve found again the usual truth that proper tooling makes woders. Changing from tool steel cutting saw blade to proper hardwood one is the ticket hereAngel. No overlaps of fixed parts will be present. Also, don´t mind about the marred screw head-you won´t find any even somehow resembling to that mess, but this one was first, so proper dia drill for this wood was in question (a bit oversize needed) so had it out about 4 times, as not having a spare:

You can see some dings from being carried in case along with bunch of other tools, ammobox from the same wood, having fallen onto frozen snow and 8 pounds of stuff falled onto it when the case hooks failed. Traces from the cutter are from cutting equal of about 3/8" stack of #8 paper. For measure, the strip cutting board slider is 1" wide.
Metric screws will be used (M5, M4), no way how to get UNF in brass here for anything distantly resembling a sane price.
The rulers shown are 1" wide, will make them 30 mm or 6/5" as to make more comfortable room for fingers when using shaving blade or beefier cutters than slim Exacto knife.

Will have oportunity to check if I manage to get a bit more of this wood monday or tuesday. Now have for 10 sets for sure, will check the other micro-pile during the weekend. It´s Ovangol, wood somehow similar to indian rosewood. These are from trunks of the biggest dimensions and oldest age, maybe that´s why is it so strange under tools. For some picture-when you want veneer from hardest, curliest beech or oak, you steam the quarters 4 days max during prep for slicing. You steam the hardest mahagony max. about 7 days. And you have to steam this wood 14+ days to get onto basic machineability...

So, if you wrote me here or PM you want one and find the flaws unacceptable, say it in this thread: http://historicshooting.com/mybb/showthread.php?tid=818 or via PM. If you find them as to be able to get along with them and want one, say it there also Smile A group buy will help much with shipping

RE: Paper Patch Cutting toolset-with photos
OK, have some photos from mfg. But it does not the justice and shows things that realy does not exist, as the waves in the wood reflects the light differently, making parts looking as unsanded or dyed. Here they are from former stages:

Lenght cutters prepared to assembly and trimmings:

Strip cutting boards in the same stage
[Image: 27PP_cutting_boards_mfg1.jpg]

Ultra blurry image which might give some idea what I dived into with some of the wood I have after sawing to dimensions-cracking upon releasing the forces from steaming, probably starting in some hair cracks from some damage to the tree
[Image: 96PP_cutting_boards_mfg1.jpg]

Tools of the trade-instead of mittrebox, I made myself this adjustable fence. Not much classy, dirt utilitarian and fast to make solution from alu profiles. Set up, clamp where needed, saw what you want. Works surprisingly well with the height of 2 2/5"

Wish I could show here some 100+ years old crosscut and rip cut saws with file sharpened teeth. Something like 25 or 32 TPI on crosscut and some fine 5,5 TPI with crown style tooth on the ripping one. But only Sandvik/Bahco hard points here. Wanted to buy the interchangeable blade system, but the wait time was 4+ weeks. People buy el cheapo mart stuff, nobody carries in stock blades per 40 bucks apiece.
But the finishing plane is one I found about 15 years back, with blade from "Warranted Sheffield cast steel". Maybe well over 100 years old. Made sharpening jig, brought it back to life when started on my (still unfinished and wanna be) LR muzzleloading gun. When I first time just tried the result of sharpening jig improvement, I stumbled into some very strange kind of berserk fierce I´ve never encountered in myself ever before and ended up with 2/3 finished stock in 40 minutes and 1 ft of shavings on the floor Big Grin. Still the only plane I can reliably use on the hardest woods I have in vicinity.

Ended up making the boards just how they fit into the pieces of the wood, as to get rid of as little as possible. No two will be of the same dimensions, every each an original. Will have time to continue on saturday and some on sunday.

Hello Jim and others, the progres is very poor-as could be seen on my forum activity log as well. In the time of the last post I got involved in quite major bussines offer, spent some weeks on schoolings, tests and the job alone abroad, then everything from those hectic weeks what was pushed in front just broke on me. Returning to the bench this weekend, I promise.
