duh ! ). It was a twenty round match and the barrel ruined as a result. It was costly in dollars but thankfully not in damage to bystanders or myself. That was about 20 yrs ago and yes I learnt something from the experience. With a new barrel fitted I went to the range with the same load but different loading technique. (No..I'm not telling
). The rifle would shoot under 3/4" at 100 yds. No ringing, no case damage... but ..
in a 45 x 2 7/8" case... 'No Reason' to be doing this at all in the first place. Went out and bought my first canister of Goex ( we could get it here then ) and started my black powder journey. Even won my first match with paper patched bullets with a mould from Tom Ballard. Doesn't seem right to do it any other way now. Clearly there are those that can load reduced smokeless in a 'modern rifle' with care and not have a problem but not 'everyone' seems to be able to do it.
. Until some realise that black powder isn't the 'boogey man' they've been made to believe I guess the smokeless brigade will continue on. As for the cost of black powder being a concern... well at present we are paying about $36USD a lb for Swiss...when we can get it... so we understand that part of the equation. Here's to this years Quigley...and any other shoot for that matter, without incident and injury free.
