I have only been shooting BP about 6-7 mos so I am working on loads and sight settings. I bought a Shiloh 45-70 for silhouette shooting that should get here Monday. I will try the 68 grains. I bought my 50-90 at an auction in Aug and it was a really good deal and a beautiful rifle so I decided I wanted to shoot a buffalo with it. I had a hunt already booked for the beginning of Nov and I was going to use my S&W 500. But I decided for me it would be more appropriate to use the BP Sharps on ole shaggy. That 50-90 did the job. I had Shiloh do the history on it and it was originally ordered as a 50-100. Still a 2 1/2" case but I wonder if the chamber runs a little long - I can seat a flat nose bullet out past the first grease groove and get 100 gr in it without undo compression. I have found references to 50-100s because that's how much powder they put in the case. But that seating is too long for another 50-90 rifle I tried to put them in. I am eventually going to try paper patch bullets before I buy dies to cast my own. But the way I wrap Christmas presents indicates that wrapping a bullet in paper (even a big 600+ gr) may not be my strong point. The Big 50 is fun to shoot, but no, I won't be shooting silhouette with it. Even with the recoil pad on it. I'll let you know how the 68 gr works out.
