Dan as I understand it a string is laid along the outside of a group, and marked where the ends meet, then the length between the end of the string and the mark is the "string measure". It was a way of seeing who shot the smallest group on a target without the benefit of scoring rings etc.
Hopefully Cody or one of the other Schuetzen guys will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong or at least give a more detailed explanation.
