RE: .44-77 and paper patch?
Yes, I have talked to Green Mountain and they admit their .44 caliber barrels run on the "tight side" (.436/.445"). While that wouldn't be what I would want given a choice it is not in and of itself a deal breaker.
Krieger barrels are single cut and lapped, that process tends to yield a more uniform and hopefully standard size bore and groove diameter (.438/.446"). I do know that those that have used the GM .44 caliber barrels are happy with them and other calibers too.
Shiloh button rifles their barrel, as does GM, so that process works well. I am a bit confused why GM would produce barrels that are consistently under size? When I emailed GM about their .44 caliber barrels they called me within 15 minutes! So they are at least cognizant of the need to address customer concerns. This was only my second direct contact with GM and I will say they are easy to talk to. I have not had a problems that they needed to take action on so I don't how they are in that area.
I've never had direct contact with Krieger. Their barrels are much used in BPCR and everyone I know of is happy with their product.
If I had this to do all over again I think I may have just gone with the 19-twist Shiloh barrel and made that work for me. I'm sure it would have, but I do believe the 17-twist Krieger will be easier to get good results with as the range increases. I'm happy with my choice, I only wish I had started here 6 months ago.
