I'm finding a pattern with the .44-77, .45-90 and the .44-100 straight I been shooting the most these last several weeks and that is they seem to shoot the best with the 83 gr loads either with the 1.5 Swiss or the 2F OE even when I can load them heavier.
With the .44-100 these last several days I went back to a lube wad. The reason I did this is when I was emptying some loads that were several years old they had a lube wad and they really put some tight groups at 200 so these last couple ladder load tests with the load data from the old loads that I used in the 25# heavy barreled Shiloh with the 17 twist that shot so good in it and they are shooting very good in the 16 twist CPA.
The target below I shot with the heavy barreled .44-2.6-100 St. it was close range in my yard that I shot those targets but they would rival some of my HP rifles at this range.
Well yesterday I went back to using a 3/16" lube wad sandwiched between a OJ carton wad using a very soft lube and a 1/16" fiber gasket wad under the bullet and deep seated the Brooks bullet 1/4" to get a little compression on the 83 gr powder load.
This 83 gr load of 2F OE out shot the no lube ladder loads with 1.5 Swiss using 93 to 100 grains of Swiss. None were anywhere near to the OE loads with the lighter powder charges.
I don't know for sure if the lube helped seal the gas back to keep the verticals next to nothing or if it was the lighter powder charges.
83 grains under a 500 gr bullet is more than good enough to make a showing at the 1K.
I used the p[owder charge at the Q the last time and it put me in 9th place using the .45-90 using the PJ 523 gr PP that has a poster nose that is just about like the .44 Sage bullet that shoots well in the .44-77.
But all of this I will work out I hope this summer. I might get to be a lubeaholic again.
