Most engine blocks are made of either alum or iron. Neither of which a gun bbl is made from.

That's the beauty of muriatic acid it doesn't attack the steel or the cast iron only dissolves the alum or the zink lead based coatings like cad plating which have to be removed to weld the steel parts.
Some times it would take a while to get the alum off the bore. It would leave a very light surface rust if not rinsed or wiped off right away.
Be interesting to research affects on steel, also this is what plumbers have used to clean sewer pipes for many years.
I believe the standard neutralizer baking soda will stop the acid action.
Jim
Then use it if you want
I'll stick with my 50/50 mix of Dextron ATF and Turpentine.
I would suggest you call a few bbl makers and get their input-I'm pretty sure what they'll say.
Gary
OK here is a follow up on this muriatic acid also known as hydrochloric acid "stomach acid" is not harmfull to steel will remove rust won't etch the steel neutralize with baking soda but is real bad for the user not kind to lungs and nasal passages. It will also remove the bluing on the gun so it would only be used for a badly leaded or rusted barrel on a gun for reconditioning and or restoring as it would need rebluing afterwards so I have to agree with Gary here don't do it unless as I said refurbishing a barrel.

RE: Bore solvents
We used oven cleaner to remove bearing material from chrome plated crankshafts when we spun bearings. Dont think I will use it on my Krieger bbl.

We would use the acid on one that spun the bearings if it looked like it hadn't tore up the journal that way we could mike it to see if reusable or send to grinder.
Like I said anyone wanting to restore an old rusty gun it works great to clean off the rust for bluing and or repair a do it your self thing save money.
