RE: irons and scopes
I have done comparisons over the years and have come to this conclusion.
ring foresights combined with aperture rear sights are extremely accurate for target and sil shooting.
the ring foresight is not good for hunting, and a blade or bead is better. also a bigger rear aperture is more appropriate.
my eyes are no longer good, but on a round aiming mark and using the correct sized ring and aperture, the iron setup cannot be equalled by a scope until the scope reaches about 15 magnification.
above that the scope takes over, but then parallax and wobble become more of an issue.
good palma shooters can shoot amazing groups when target and sights match the light.
it took me a long time to learn to trust the sight picture with irons, and to learn this you need an accurate rifle and ammunition.
sometimes you call a shot with irons as being a bit out, and the call is correct in direction, but less in distance than you think.
this suggests serious capability of these sights. the eye can detect quite small differences.
irons take more thought and effort than scopes, but you have to do it to get the results.
one thing with irons is never to aim off. always wind and aim centre for best results.
focusing on the foresight is also critical.
another thing about irons is that you should not hold aim for more than 5 - 10 seconds, as memory can take over and you see what is etched into the mind as opposed to what is really there.
you have to abort the shot, look at something close not through the sights, and start again.
but then that is what all good shooting is. you achieve it by not shooting unless all is good.
keep safe,
bruce.
