Question for Bruce M
Could you tell me how you are using machining oil in your paper patch wipping routine?
I read your post on another forum that I am not signed up on. Would like a little rust protection for my action.

RE: Question for Bruce M
kokomid,
just 10 parts water to 1 part Castrol cutting oil.
I believe napa oil is popular in the u.s.
different proportions are worth experimenting with.
murphy's oil soap will wipe as well or better, but will leave the block with a rust stain.
some use antifreeze which I believe has detergent action and also resists rust, but I have not tried it,
I push a wet patch through to remove most of the fouling and wet what is left.
a second wet down to the muzzle, back to the breech and then out the muzzle finishes the job, the backpull intended to wipe the front of the rifling as the forward push wipes the back.
I have found that 2 dries offers the most consistent bore condition, but would not argue with someone who has found otherwise.
possibly a stronger solution will leave the bore a little more oily, and this could be a good thing if consistent.
when shooting longer ranges, vert becomes the enemy. you always make the good windcalls on a vert shot.
you can do something about reading the wind, but you cannot do anything about points lost to vert.
consistent barrel condition is one of the most important ways to avoid vert.
keep safe,
bruce.

RE: Question for Bruce M
Thanks, First wet patch is swimming in di water and I get a little water into my action even with the action upside down. Have to turn gun back up to pull brush back out. Will try the oil and see what happens.

RE: Question for Bruce M
kokomid,
when time is important, the detergents in a wiping solution make pushing the first patch much easier.
quicker and less tiring.
wetter water dissolves fouling more readily.
keep safe,
bruce.
