I have been looking and can't find a definitive list of legal BPCR silhouette competition cartridges

Does such a list exist ?

To my knowledge there is no official bpcr silloutte cartridge list. Just the guide lines as spelled out in the rules.

The question is asked because of this unique situation

40-70-SS is almost identical to 405 Winchester

40-70-SS is sometimes formed from 30-40 Krag and 405 Winchester

the 405 Winchester fails the "rules" because it was made after the cut off date and for that other powder

40-70-SS shooters could be accused of shooting the 405 because of the headstamp

I plan to shoot a 405 Winchester at silhouettes, for fun at least (the rifle is a friends and a beauty of a Highwall) and hope it could be accepted as legal but knowing "the rules" i betcha it won't be allowed as a 40-70 SS-----------barrel is stamped 405

Just for kicks and grins, get ahold of some of the Jamison 40-70 brass, load a few and see how they shoot. If they shoot alright, with no lead build up problems then get enough brass to shoot the match and go have a good time.
I think the biggest problem you'll have is making that 14 twist barrel shoot well at blackpowder velocity.
That also prompts another thought, if it doesn't have the 14 twist it's not a true 405 and the argument could be made....

KURT, I rang a ram at the Tex state meet last year (540 gr) at 1210 fps 45-70.

Dave I don't think there should be a problem. They call the .405 full case length loaded with black powder a .40-72. I would think that several .40-72 shooters would have a problem too then. But I cant say for sure I will shoot my first official silhouette match at the end of the month with a .45-70 or maybe the .44-75 ballard that has a case head stamp .45-2.6.

koko that sounds like you hit a tough ram!!! I had some deer that stayed up after the first shot they where hit with also

I cant say Dave about a 1/14 ROT in a .40 all mine have a 1/16 ROT.
I can say this I have a 1/16, 1/17 and a 1/19 ROT in a .44 and the 1/17 and 1/19 shoot better then the 1/16 if that means anything.
But a lot of guys shoot the fast twist in the .38's and .40's.
I have a 1/16 .45-90 being build that might be a mistake rifle maybe ?? find out when I get it.
