RE: The 44-100 caliber
Jim, when you say long range, are you thinking beyond 1,000 yards ?

The 44-100 will pretty much do what the 45-110 will do out to 1,000 yards, but, as far as Target Rifle Shooting the 2.4 cases will do it just as well if not better under high heat and low humidity conditions.

Shooting past 1,000 yards the longer cases should have an advantage. I don't shoot past 1,000 so I can't really advise you on that.

RE: The 44-100 caliber
Zack I like the .44-75 Ballard caliber that is on a 2.5' case as far as a mild recoiling caliber. My .44-100 Rem is a very accurate rifle but the .44-75 I really never really found out what it is capable of doing at long range because it was chambered in a bad barrel and I re chambered it for the .44-90/2-5/8 BN to give the bullet a little more kick to fill the deep grooves the barrel had. I will revisit that caliber if I can find a barrel maker that can bore a .438/.446 gain twist barrel.
My .44-100 Rem St. has a 1/17 ROT and there is nothing in my safe that will out shoot it short of the 700 Rem. Smile I also have one with a 1/16 ROT that does not do as well as the 1/17 for some reason using the same bullets.
The reason a dog has so many friends is because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.
