RE: The 4th of July is not just fireworks
Nothing worth having is ever free. Many salute those that have served and have been in combat. My self included. But there are many that to this day are teased about their service and dedication to country. I spent just short of 24 years in the Army Reserve. I never was called to active duty for combat. For that I am grateful. Had I been called, I would have gone without hesitation. When I turned in my papers for retirement, my uniforms were folded and put away. My dress uniform is hanging in a wardrobe hoping to never be needed to be worn again.
For many many years, I was called "weekend worrier" " part time soldier" and other not so nice names, yet I stayed in. I did my time, served my 20 plus. There are many out there that don't know what all is expected of the "part time soldier". As a Reservist or National Guard soldier, you have to meet the same standards of fitness of an active duty soldier, maintain the same skill level in your given ocupation, and do that just a couple of weeks a year, when you add it all up. Not an easy task when you take into condiseration a full time job, a family and other obligations.
Now before you all want to jump on the bandwagon and thank me for my service, keep in mind, I did it for the money and for the benefits that might come my way in the long run. Yes I am proud of my time in the service, don't get me wrong there. Yes I am now at the age I am taking full advantage of those benefits.
What I would much rather you do is 2 things. If you ever hear anyone teasing anyone for being a part time soldier, correct them and set them straight. Anyone that puts on the uniform and take the oath, should be respected. The second is go out and google " santa clause and the soldier" its quiet a touching story. Those that serve are of a somewhat different mind set from the rest of the general public. That story shows it.
Yes the 4th is a time of great celebration, picnics, fireworks, party's and beer. Somewhere out there, there is someone that you should say a prayer for, thank, and wish for their safe return home.
Sam
