Hello folks
I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Mike, I'm the new guy. I'm from Asheville, NC but have lived in GA south of Atlanta. I am a retired Firefighter / Paramedic after 32 years. Retired in 2003. Joined U. S. Army at 19 and spent my time in jungle in SE Asia. I've been reloading for modern firearms since I was 17 or so. I just acquired an original Springfield Trapdoor in great condition and decided to give BP a whorl. Therefore I signed up here hoping to get some sage advice for the inevitable questions that will arise. Thank you in advance. Mike

Welcome Mike. And I'm glad you made it home from that Jungle.

RE: Hello folks
Thanks fellows. First question. Been reading some on BP cartridges and find that some loads need filler. Haven't assembled any yet but have found that 65 gr. of black powder doesn't leave enough room for a 405 gr. bullet. Why filler? and do I need a wad over powder. I'm trying to duplicate the original load for 45-70 carbine. Thinking it won't be as rough on my old rifle. Am I barking up the wrong tree here? Also just for my own head.......can I substitute GRITS for the cream-of-wheat as a filler? Cream-of-wheat is hard to come by here in GA.

RE: Hello folks
Another guy named "Mike." That can't be all bad... Okay, filler is often used by shooters who are making lighter loads for the longer black powder cartridges, such as the .45/100s. With a .45/70 you probably won't need any. And, to duplicate the old carbine load, just use 55 grains of powder, then an over-powder wad of .060" followed by the bullet. That is just about like the old carbines loads the troops used. And seat that bullet deep enough that you are compressing the powder at least a little bit. Also, don't worry about power, a 55 grain carbine load barks very nicely. Shoot sharp, Mike
