Hey Don
Way off topic, but we might be taking a road trip this spring and I'm looking for some places to metal detect along the way. I was wondering if there's any old ghost towns or mining tows I might be able to hit along I 80 or??

RE: Hey Don
There are quite a few places along I80 but none of them are particularly close to the interstate. Probably the closest to the interstate would be the old Carbon town site between Hanna and Medicine Bow. There are a bunch of old mining sites south of Rawlins in the Sierra Madres. Several of the old stage stops on the Overland route between Rock Springs and Rawlins, but they are all quite a ways off of the road, and if it's wet, you don't want to go there... And if you have the time do not go thru without stopping at the Encampment museum.

RE: Hey Don
Thanks Don. Might try to find some old abandoned home sites too. Some interesting relics there. If someone doesn't pull them out of the ground, they just rust away. Any historic site is usually off limits also some state parks where there might be artifacts (which is some cases will also just rust away).

RE: Hey Don
So many of those places have been pretty well picked over. There are a number of old cabin sites inside the National Forest and on BLM land that may not have been gone thru to much, but they aren't easy to get to or find either.

RE: Hey Don
Since I'll be somewhat limited in time, I'll probably look for old parks. Even well picked over places yield goodies.

RE: Hey Don
Well there are a plenty of those places , but you'll have to have time to get well off of the Interstate.

Gussy I carry a metal detector also. A word of warning when in California they are liable to fine you big time picking up "artifacts." I'm a member of the Lost Dutchman's mining association and get their monthly reports and some have been fined by the forest service guys picking up junk like square nails, barbwire broken horse shoes and put it in the junk bag to carry it out when they are looking for nuggets.

Thanks Kurt. I'll keep that in mind any place I go. You never know when some guy is short on his quota!!
