Rolling Block Help
The owner of my local gun shop knows I like the older stuff and showed me this Remington Carbine and asked for help identifying it. He said it is chambered in 50-70 Government. Here are the photos I snapped.

They added some sort of HiViz light pipes to the rear sight (I think just epoxy):

Some paint on the front:

After some time spent on Google I'm thinking this isn't original and was pieced together. I know it was completely refinished.

I'll continue in a following post.

A cleaning rod hole was filled in with a dowel:

The Upper tang is proud of the wood and this is the best cartouche on the buttstock:

It has a neat rear sight:

So, what do you think it is and what do you think it's worth? I'm not interested in it but I'd like to help the gun shop out with some better information than I can provide on my own with my limited experience with these neat, old rifles.

RE: Rolling Block Help
I'm wondering if it was an infantry rifle that someone "sporterized" at some point in time, and then someone later decided to "improve " the sights?
No idea what it would be worth, other than what someone is willing to pay for it.
A wise man can always be found alone. A weak man can always be found in a crowd.

Quien Sabe? Definitely been modified by someone that probably did not plan to shoot it very much

RE: Rolling Block Help
I made a reply to this last night but it appears to have flown off into the ether somewhere. It is a nice looking gun overall but I noticed somethings about it and am offering my 2cts worth.
the rear sight looks to be a rear sight from a 1879 trapdoor buckhorn 3rd or 4th version and the front sight hood also looks to be from a trapdoor as it looks identical to the one I have for my trapdoor.
Not sure what Remington but plates should look but the tang on this one looks to be a trapdoor configuration and maybe the barrel band spring?

RE: Rolling Block Help
Thank you both for the information and opinions. I've passed it along to the gun shop.

Interesting little big bore for sure. It just doesn't blow my skirt up.

One other thing I forgot to mention on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver there appears to be gouge marks from a pipe wrench having been used to R & R the barrel at one time can't see the right side clear enough to determine if there are marks there also.

RE: Rolling Block Help
Thanks Jim.

I don't recall if both sides share the teeth marks. I'll mention it next time I'm in the shop.

It's always neat to see what turns up there.
