What primer for OE 1 1/2?
I'm wondering what primer you guys are using with OE 1 1/2. I'm working with a new BPCR shooter with a .45-70 and we are going to give paper patch bullets a try using OE 1 1/2 and I have no idea what primer works best with that powder. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!

Jim, judging from what I am hearing though the grapevine, and seeing in some online discussions, at this point any primer you have on hand would be the place to start. Beyond that, I would guess that BR-2 primers would be good. Fed LR would be the next choice and work your way down the list from there.
I would also hazard a guess if you were to set down and try to make up a list of all the variables to try you would end up with a lot of paper and hand cramps. Different primers, over primer wads, different over primer wad material. Different placement of the primer wad, inside the case, under the primer with a pistol primer, on and on it would go.
If you have different primers, load some with each and change nothing else and see what the target tells you. The target might tell you a lot, it might not, but for sure it will tell you that you all had a good day on the range. Good fun and good company is the best of times in this day.

Just a little update, I was just on the Midway site, no primers available, 3 pages of different primers, none in stock. That just sucks.

Today, use ANY lr primer you can find.
I was very surprised how well military primers worked.

I'm in good shape for primers, but I am hoping that by the end of the year I can replenish the inventory.

Way things are going.
I have a feeling it's going to be more than a year to get this primer mess to level out.
I really hope I'm wrong about this.

I figure you're probably right , because until they can get the ammunition back orders caught up they're not likely to have any excess primers to feed the hand loading market.
I'm good for probably 2 maybe 3 years if I don't go hog wild with the practice and load development thing.

RE: What primer for OE 1 1/2?
Ok, thanks everyone.

I have always started with Fed. 210s with Swiss powder and Fed. 215s with Goex. Those primer with those two powders will usually give good results for starting loads and then I work from there. I was thinking that OE might have a primer that would be a "best" place to start and I didn't want to recommend something I knew nothing about.

Sam, You are correct shooting with friends is always a good day! I'm looking forward to matches this summer. I hope we don't start out like last year! No matches until July! Such BS!

I'm ok on primers, lead and powder, but I won't be just burning any of it up like I can just go to the store and buy more! I fear it will be a good bit before we can restock on any of it. We are not in good times at present.
