RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Bill,
I will be happy to send you some of the bullets.
What again is the twist of your CPA 38-50 barrel?
I have both the JIM371360E/1.46" for 10 twist ,
and, for now with borrowed mold I designed for friend, I
can supply shooting samples of the JIM371345E /1.4" long for 12 twist.
Acttually, I Could send you some of each to try.
Both bullets shoot well in my 38-50 10 twist over 66-67 gr Swiss 1.5
You can have a look at both of the designs on the BACO catalog

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
I just placed an order for the JIM371345E /1.4" long for my 12 twist up coming .38-50 Hepburn. It will be 3-4 months before I get it but I'm sure that barrel will have all the rough edges cleaned off in short time when I put my hands around it so I will spent the winter casting so I don't have to do this when I have the rifle and wanting to shoot it.

Oh the clock hands have slowed down again even though I keep it wound tight. Big Grin

I just ordered a 38-50 cpa for the wife. Short stock to fit her LOP 12 twist 30” Douglas # 3 profile barrel.
She has decided to jump into the sillywet game.

What did we start?
This 38-50 thing is really gathering "steam"
I sure am liking mine. A 10 twist Douglas 30" on a Brg BPCR rebarrel by Mike Lewis
It shoots both my 371360E and the 371345E very well

The gauges I pushed in the bore indicate a diameter of .3694. I will order a mould that is .005” under that diameter since the paper I use adds about .005”

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
ian,
You apparently already have the 38-50 CPA for your wife
Your land diameter at 0.3694 is larger than in my Douglas barrel.
Perhaps Douglas has changed buttons or perhaps it is because your barrel is a 12 twist, which
would use a different button than for my (rather older) 10 twist barrel.

My Douglas barrel chamber cast indicates a groove diameter of 0.377 and the bore/lands are "pass /fail" on 0.366/.367" plugs
Recall that we are dealing with two diameters on the JIM371345E. So you need to specify both diameters as relates to your Paper
and the Groove an Bore diameters. AND, more importantly re. the Groove diamater you want ideally for the base band to have a diameter that will slip fit, but snugly into your twice/three times Fire Formed cases. That way you should not have to do any taper crimping, etc

This barrel that I measured is my Green Mountain 12 twist barrel. Gail has the Douglas barrel that will be on my wife’s gun. When Gail starts working on it I will ask her to give me the actual bore diameter of that one and go from there. I will stick with the straight sided bullets for now. I have some various DD 45 cal bullets to try but I just havnt made that jump yet.

Well, it was SO foggy this AM that after 30 miles I turned around and headed home, will try to get to Effingham tomorrow. Got my virgin 38/50 barrel out and traded it for my 40/60 Maynard, slugged the bore and cast the chamber and leade. 3765-.377 groove and .3665-.367 bore about .060 freebore. Am loading up some ladder loads with a BACO money 360 grains with the nose and first driving band reduced.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
whos barrel did you use for your 38 build? This GM barrel I have seems to be on the large side although it is within their own specs. I have a feeling that the barrel on my wifes 38 will be much tighter
