Tragic safety reminder

Some of the skeet shooters may recognize the name Wayne Mayes. He is a top ranked national class skeet shooter. He also taught a lot of training classes, all shotgun. I knew him in Texas, good guy.

Wayne Reloaded, LOTS of shotshells, as in using 40 gallon roll around trash cans for storage bins. Last week he was handling some powder in his reloading room. I do not have the exact details but something went wrong and the powder flashed, burning him and his house. He is in bad shape at the San Antonio burn unit. I am sure prayers are appreciated, for him and his family.

This is a reminder, don't ever forget that when you handle gun powder keep in mind the potential hazards. Open only what you need at that time, and keep all the fine dust swept up, with a broom and a dust pan, not an electric shop vac.

Never allow yourself to get complacent. I have visited dying people in a burn unit. That is not how you want to go.

Oh man, I did the shop vac thing once and blew the locked down lid off.
I will remember him on the bench.

Man Set on Fire

A man trying to get rid of gun powder is recovering from serious burns.

Officials say he accidentally set himself on fire in front of his home on Gable Oaks near Military this afternoon.

He poured out two jars of gun powder on the ground in front of the house.

The first batch was lit on fire without a problem, but officials say when he lit the second batch it caused an explosion that set him on fire.

He was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center.

There's no word on his condition.

When I've had BP I wanted to dispose of, I scatter it loosely around the back-yard lawn; no fire needed. My neighbors say I have the best looking lawn on the block!

longtime ago on another forum I asked about loads using FFg Elephant.. more than a few told me to fertilize the yard with it. I been loading it in my 45 2 7/8's and using up all my odds and ends bullets and cookie lubes, works fine . Practice is practice. Yup it burns dirty and fouls hard, big deal. bobw

Update on Wayne Mayes, from John Haugh, midday Thursday:

"Wayne is out of his 2nd surgery. Doctors say the surgery went 'Well' -- always good news. This set of bandages will come off next Monday, so that will be his next milestone. There is no doubt in my mind that with all the thoughts and prayers going their way and Wayne's incredible 'fight' that he continues to make baby step progress. KEEP IT UP. God bless Wayne and Linda and the medical staff caring for Wayne."
