MP Rifle
If you could build a multi-purpose rifle what would it be? I've been studying the Anschutz 64 MPR below & hear talk on the web of people using them for this & that so I’m wondering about the same type rifle only center fire.

Perhaps something to use off the bench, standing or prone, even in the field for varmints or long deer, nothing larger. If you visit other sites you may see this same thread as I’m looking for as much thought as possible from you guys.

RE: MP Rifle
I don't know Lyn, if I were tempted to make a do it all bolt gun, I think I'ld take a look at maybe rebarrelling a Remington 788 with a heavy barrel in 308.
And of course the model 70 and Rem 700 are both near and dear to me when it comes to bolt guns. And then there's the grand ol cartridge that all others are judged by.... 3006 Smile

RE: MP Rifle
And almost forgot, as ugly and utilitarian as they are, those Savage 110's usually shoot lights out as they come from the box..

RE: MP Rifle
All good choices Don. I should say while the rifle could be hunted with it would probably be more varmints than anything else. I do want a tack driver, something easy to shoot off hand or prone. And while I do enjoy the bench, off hand is my favorite. I really don't want something with a bunch of recoil as my 9.5 pound '06 has all I want & it's in a OverMolded stock with pillars & a full length aluminum bedding block which really takes all the bite out of shooting it. Maybe something in 6MM? Something to shoot often & a lot.

RE: MP Rifle
243 would work very good in that role..250 savage or 257 Roberts also.
Another that I have no experience with but have been tempted by is the 7mm08. I do have some trigger time on a 7x57 and know its versatility, and as the 708 does the same thing albeit a bit higher pressure..

RE: MP Rifle
I have considered the 7-08 & the 260. Both would work well. I have a Roberts AI which fits a do all hunting rifle for where I live. The 250 Savage would be great but target bullets do not abound for the 1/4 bore. But not the 243 is a real possibility. The do eat the throats out but I could probably rebarrel after 3 thousand or so rounds. You have me thinking Don.

RE: MP Rifle
I think if a person stuck with H414 or 4350 in the 243 it would give excellent barrel life.
I get some super accuracy and velocity with the 80 and 100 gr bullets in the 243 with 414.

RE: MP Rifle
The Ruger version of the Gunsite/Cooper rifle would be hard to beat if an M14 mag would/could fit.

RE: MP Rifle
Buy a M700 Remington ADL in 243 they have a 1 in 9 twist rate, most 243's aren't twisted this tight. the tight twist is needed for 105 gr Hornady AMax bullets that are very high BC and in a class of their own to 1000 yds. My old BDL shoots them fine. Very few high bc bullets for LR work in 25 cal and they are spendy. bobw
