Doc shot the old Farmer
his 50-90 rifle that is...
First off we want to thank all the folks that sent bullets. He didn't load the full selection for todays session but he loaded quite a few. What we did find out was that as long as the powder charge is 100 grs of Cartridge the ol bugger is going to shoot pretty decent. We only shot to 100 yds. But you'ld a thought he won the match agains the Irish team to today, especially when he pulled one shot a bit high and dang near cut the 1 1/4 well pipe that holds the gong up , purt neart in two

Doc had went to the gunshow down in Mitchel yesterday. Came home grumping he should of bought some 45-70 brass he saw that he thought the price was cheap..Kept trying to talk his self into going back to get it.. "How much would Shiloh charge to rebarrel this rifle/"
When we got thru with this little deal he started talking about buying 50 cal moulds digging into his stash of wheelweights, and said "well I guess I don't need to worry about getting back down there to buy that 45-70 brass now... and there wasn't any mention of the rebarrel project.

Don, there is not much for windage in those old sporting tangs but there is some. Best bet is to set it in the middle and move the frt till it's on left and right. What bullets is Doc finding that work the best (weight and mold)? bobw

Bob we're shooting my Heilman sight on that rifle. The sight that came on it was one of those cheapo Italian "creedmoor" sights, on a short base and missing one of the "windage" screws.
So once we figure out what bullet/bullets he's going to shoot we'll get a mechanical zero, but at the moment the paper patch bullets were shooting to the right of the greasers, but we weren't horribly concerned about windage adjustment as the winds were gusting pretty hard from time to time from the left, or switching back and catching us head on.
We're also going to have to decide if he's going to stick with that fixed pin front sight or if we go with a sight we can change aperatures..
Lots of ground to cover yet, but at least we got him started on it.
