Best source of information on slug guns
Hi,
Where would I start looking if I wanted to learn about slug guns? Every now and then I find a short article about them, but information seems really sparse. I recently picked up Ned Roberts book on the muzzle loading rifle.
Does anyone make slug guns anymore?
Thanks,
Chris.

RE: Best source of information on slug guns
Chris few do,
very darn few mine are both build in the early 80's by Ken Bresein, who has passed. Jimbo happend on to a very nice Slug gun for sale at the NMLRA Winter shoot, It was not Cheap............all the tools load data chest equipment was $3000 and worth every penny.
One just has to start looking very little information on them, I have done tons of searching myself.
NMLRA Friendship match is another good place too look and ask.

Thanks Kenny. I'll have to make a road trip to the Friendship match and do some learning, maybe next year if I can swing it.

RE: Best source of information on slug guns
Chris, You might contact the Canal Fulton Ramrod Club in Ohio. Google the name to get to their website. It's been in existence since 1812, and there are some good pics of slug guns on the line. They may be able to help you w/ more info.

RE: Best source of information on slug guns
A set of papers was written by Lester Cox of Warren OH on building slug rifles and loading implements. These were re -written in several articles by Gerald DeVaudreuil for Muzzle Blasts and should be available through the NMLRA. I have a copy of Lester's papers given to me by Rich Hicks but would have to find them...

RE: Best source of information on slug guns
That is excellent! Apparently it shoots quite well :-).
I see that it uses paper patched bullets, but not cross or chase patched. Are they a two layer wrapped patch like I'd use in a cartridge rifle? If so, do you know how the final patched diameter compares to the bore diameter? Were wads of any sort used?
I see a stud on the side of the barrel about 2/3rds the way toward the muzzle. What is that used for?
Sorry about the barrage of questions :-)
Thanks very much for posting.
Chris.
