If recoil is a problem the .44-70 Maynard would also be a good one. It is based on the .45-70 brass.
Kelley O Roos uses the .44-75/.44-90 with very good results.

That's the Seth Cole 55w. Those bullets were pulled from other rounds and put in the cases for photographic purposes...

That makes sence now looking at it Don. It looked to me like tracing paper or cabon paper. I may have missed it, but did you get a rifle to shoot it in yet?

Yes, I had my C Sharps 75 rebarreled. So far it sure shoots good. Hopefully tomorrow or Sunday get to run some load tests with some patched bullets.

Do the CSA/Redding dies size the case down enough to chamber a newly formed case ?

Bob yes they do. That CSA chamber is reported to be so tight, that shooting grease groove bullets thru it is not a simple task.
The chamber your reamer left , makes resizing a non issue, so the sizing die from the set is only used when taking the walmart caliber down to 44.

JReed, I don't know what you are planning to use a .44 for, but just to deepen the rabbit hole a little more, there is a shorter 44 you may want to look into as well. That would be the 44-60 BN. It uses a 1.88 long case and should have less recoil than a 40-65. I have seen that there are dies and cases available. My thinking is that the cases could easily be made by resizing and shortening either 44-77 or 43 Spanish brass.
Just more food for thought.

Eventually I would like to get into silhouette and target shooting. So looking at chamberings with the legs to get way out there without the recoil of the heavy 45's. Don has me looking at the 44's with all these posts of his lol.
