Bob, My 92 holds 13 in the mag. Kurt, Fore me the 357 is handy because i have several pistols in that cal and i use the same load in all of them.

Kurt, Hipshot hit it for me too. I have 38-357 revolvers lots of brass and molds. I was thinking with 158 jacketed sp at 1700 fps that it would double for a 100 yd deer load,yet with a 150 gr SWC and 3 grs of Bullseye it would be allright on small game too. 44-40 uses 427 bullets maybe one of my .429" molds would work but I sure don't have brass ,dies ,molds etc. Gearing up for the 44-40 would cost as much as the rifle will and buying a 357 model sure won't. Money will be tight enough in 2013 without doing it to myself to boot. bob

I think the little .38 would make a good can roller.
I been procrastinating on a new lever rifle and I have a 5 gallon bucket full left of .38 brass that the prison guards gave me sitting out in the shed. I been giving a lot away to the Cowboy shooters but I'm still leaning towards the .44-40.

Bob don't count on a modern 44-40 using 427 bullets. Most are built on 430 barrels just like the 44 sp/mag. The big question is did the manufacturer enlarge the chamber reamer to fit the barrel???

If I had my druthers I'd scare up one of the Marlin 1894 Century Limited 44-40's over a 92 clone anytime.

Since this topic started It got my interest back up for finding a lever rifle.
I have a few but the Marlins I have all have the Microgroove bore except the 99 Savages.
From looking at the gun auctions and a few other retailers there are a lot of old originals with bright bores for the price the clones are selling for. No they aren't in the .38 Spl but I think I would tool up for a .44.
Darn it Bob, I really dont need another rifle !!

Kurt, the MG Marlin bbl is fine for smokeless lead loads. Great for jacketed too. Not so much with BP.
I load 158gn RNFP with 4gn Unique in .38 Specials or .357 cases.

I have a .30-30 and a 444 with the MG bore and yes they are a bear to get to shoot, but they will shoot when you get the alloy and load worked out by spending a little time at the range with them.
