RE: Best source of information on slug guns - Plastikosmd - 04-07-2015 Gun is a 1860 something Pierce, a contemporary of billinghurst I was told. The pins were for some form of loader, not really sure. My other mechanical loaders work off of false muzzle pins. Those are oxidized lead slugs, not paper patch, rather it is a cross patch gun. Alloy, as I was told was 1:20 lead tin, rear is pure lead. The gun was also shot at 600 yard match at camp Pendleton Not sure if gun was shot by both Lester or Clyde hill who took second and first respectively. Nevertheless, the gun did well. Both guys played a role in developing the slug for this gun. Sigh, I was born in the wrong age
RE: Best source of information on slug guns - Gunlaker - 04-07-2015 Thank you. I had assumed that any of the guns made in the 1860's would still have been picket guns, but I know very little of this stuff. I was just guessing on the patching. In the picture where the gun and bullets are sitting on the railing, it looked to me like one of the bullets was pre-patched. That is a really nice piece of history. Chris. RE: Best source of information on slug guns - Plastikosmd - 04-08-2015 You are probably right on picket. U can see in the note that Clyde came up with new slug after some work on the gun by Lester. Not sure what was done as it looks original, it is a cool piece owned and worked on by a few of the greats RE: Best source of information on slug guns - RobertS - 04-14-2015 Check out the "Percussion Target Rifle ...." series of articles at the NMLRA website: http://nmlra.org/muzzle-blasts/articles/ RE: Best source of information on slug guns - RobertS - 04-15-2015 The website americanlongrifles.com has some slug gun information, though you may have to search for it.
