I cant say Dave about a 1/14 ROT in a .40 all mine have a 1/16 ROT.
I can say this I have a 1/16, 1/17 and a 1/19 ROT in a .44 and the 1/17 and 1/19 shoot better then the 1/16 if that means anything.
But a lot of guys shoot the fast twist in the .38's and .40's.
I have a 1/16 .45-90 being build that might be a mistake rifle maybe ?? find out when I get it.

weeeellllllllll perhaps on a month or so i'lll have an answer to the mystery Smile

RE: silhouette cartridges
I haven't been able to get my 405 to shoot black worth a poop yet, and I know some of the guys that had 40-xx'sl built on the 14 twist aren't finding the nirvana they thought they were in for.
If that barrel is a true .405 barrel, you'll need a .400 diameter slick.
Quite a few years back they were basically renaming the 405 to something else and running with it, but that didn't last long.
16 twist is already quite a bit faster than the normal 40 cal twist which was mostly 18 and 20 back in the day.

RE: silhouette cartridges
Did you shoot any holes through them? Big Grin

It was Easter weekend and I had a house full of cookie munchers large and small. Smile Had to cancel out.

I'm going to make the trip to Alma the end of the month. Gary and MJ have been twisting my arm to shoot the iron critters so it will start at Alma Mich. MJ said she had a problem with the white painted silhouettes with the bright sun reflecting off them.
Here is the schedule if you have time to head over.

RE: silhouette cartridges
I don't think your 405 will be allowed as a legal entry. The match director may allow you to shoot for fun though. If it was marked 40-72, you would be allowed I believe. The real question will be, what is the rate of twist? Bullet weight and shape?

I'm guessing that you have a good rifle for light fast bullets but not for big and slow.

RE: silhouette cartridges
Dave, I know of some that shoot the 40-82 with fast twist 14 or 14 1/2 to the 1000yd line in BPTR.
