Wayne, after putting a slow speed motor on my thumblers I still get case peening if I run with ss pins for much longer than an hour. I anneal after each firing so my starline cases may be a little soft. My solution was to use the largest pin gage possible in an as fired case after tumbling that can be pushed into the case easliy. For my 45-70 that was .459- and I use a size die with large enough threaded opening for the gage to go up into.
