RE: Need some sugestions
Yes it Don and I had a 94 Marlin in that caliber and it even shot pretty decent in a sewer pipe bore, but they don't make or load the .28-30 anymore so I will bring it back to life again Smile It was a great caliber also in the Schuetzen circuits also. Quite a few rifles where chambered in this caliber. Bertram still makes a limited run of basic brass for this round also, but I never had too good of experience using Bertram brass.

Kurt I was talking about the 25-20 single shot, it's a horse of anudder color than the 25-20 Winchester. Captec makes brass for the 25-20 ss, I wonder if it could be simply neck expanded for the 28? http://www.captechintl.com/proddetail.ph...520B100pcs

Don the bases are a big difference between the two.
The .25-20 Stevens has a .315" base and the WCF .25-20 has a .349 base.

Kurt, I take it that the 28-30 is based on the 25-20 Stevens case? From the looks of that case turning it into a .28 would leave little to no shoulder on it, or is it a straight tapered case much like the 32-40 only smaller?

Sam, The .28-30 case is a long taper with a case length of 2 1/2" and a rim diameter of .412". That rim is just about the same size as the rim on the old .32 Ideal cartridge. Speaking of the .32 Ideal, Kurt, why not go with that one?

Sam.

I'm not sure, But I think the .28-30 might have started from the .25-20 Stevens. The base diameters are pretty close but the 28 case is longer.
I been researching these .25, .28 and 32's for a while and all three have a very good reputation for accuracy.

Sam my first thought was the .25-21 Stevens. It was the first black powder cartridge rifle I shot. When I was about 12 I used to peddle my bike into town to get a box of .22 shorts. This is the gun shop my Mother got me my first .22 single shot and she asked Spike the owner of the shop if he would teach me how to shoot this rifle. Spike took me under his arms and I spent a lot of time with him doing odd and end stuff getting things from the store or sweeping the shop floor and we would step out the back door and shoot tin cans off the fence posts.
One day he pulled a rifle off the rack and he said lets try this on today, it's my favorite he said. When he opened the box of shells and I looked at those long skinny shells my eyes must have popped open and Spike said, Ladd around here we only shoot black powder Smile Shooting that old single shot Stevens hooked me on black powder and a couple years later I saw a .43 Spanish Roller In the back pages of a NRA magazine and got it.

If something "28" was to be on the docket, I'ld think just going the 7-30 waters and calling it 28-3x would be close enough..
Altho going with the 32-40 can't apparently be a bad decision when you consider all the praise and medals heaped upon it in years gone by..

The 32-70 is a good one for sure Don.
But I like to shoot what most haven't heard of or want Smile

drcook has one on a .444 case. I don't know how it is shooting for him.

That 32-70 above is a miss take, it should be .32-40.
I sort of want a tin can roller incase I get wimpy down the road and that puts it into a .25 or 28 caliber Smile
