I have a sorta "el cheapo" but I can see paper target hits at 300 yards if the light is ok and the wind is not vibrating the scope very much

looking at an "upgrade", my son-in-law needs something good when I am dead and gone

I have a KOWA 82MM, IIRC. With a 25X eyepiece and a 20-60 eyepiece. For bullet-holes in paper beyond 400 yds, I use the 20-60, but for seeing hits on steel targets out to 1000 yards, the 25 is just fine. I think the mirage is easier to see with the 25x.

my setup is 3 years old but IIRC I paid around $900 for scope, two eyepieces and a Kowa full-length soft carry-case. Search Optics Planet for more recent prices,

I want to add here that some of the medium $ scopes can be very good. A friend has a $200 Bushnell 20-60 x60MM scope that is one of the clearest scopes I've ever peeked thru. So you might get lucky and find one. Just keep looking thru as many as possible, and you might find what you're looking for.

I bought a Konus about 7 years ago and am well pleased. It is not a Kowa but the $800 difference in price bough a lot of powder.
