I like the Southern Mountain stile rifles that where build for the fur trades. Iron furniture forged with a hammer and put together with copper or bronze wire riveted. A working mans rifle.

I looked at that Hawken Rick posted. It was listed for a spell and I thought strongly about getting it. It is a fine late model with nice looking wood, but I really want a early full stock with a light barrel in a .54. My 1-1/8" is just getting to heavy for me to hold steady off hand for the local stuffer matches. It will put each ball on top of each other at 50 yards but I cant hold it off hand anymore to get this done anymore. That is why I passed that rifle up. Sitting in a blind that will make a fine freezer filler.
Rick you will find that it will put each ball in the same hole.

That rifle Rick is getting when I first saw the pic, my heart went pitapat, it looked like one of the old Green River Hawken's, but they used Sharon barrels.
I keep threatening to get ol Klatch out and let him stretch his legs again, but always something else needs doing worse. Last antelope I shot with that rifle was about 25 paces past 225 long running steps away from the muzzle. Lot of fun with that thing, but dang it got heavy draggin it around the hills.

What time do I have to put in for a hunt on 'lopes' in your area?? I'd really consider coming that way! I ain't a 'fireball' on walking myself to death; rather pick a good/likely spot where I can just sit and wait! After all....a 'hunt' ain't a loss if no shot is taken! I'll enjoy the solitude in Gods great domain!! I'd even bring a 1/2 gallon of FAMOUS GROUSE!!

My main 'mentors' have always been the Rdnck, You, and Orville so I know atop the advice the Rdnck has already dispensed onto me....I'm also interested in your experience! Any loads/etc. you can throw this way will....as usual be regared seriously!!

I'm coming that way this Spring....if God allows me!!

Rick I think the deadline is June 1. You draw a permit, you'll get to shoot, whether you hit one or not, I won't guarantee..
If there are legal deer about, you should be able to get a license over the counter, so you won't have to worry about spending that money until we know there's a reason to.

That's a really nice rifle you bought there. About 30 years ago I bought the full stock hawken .54 flintlock kit that Track of the Wolf was selling. It Had a 1 in 70" twist. It's heavy but it really shoots nice. I had my Shiloh .54 sporting rifle out at the range with the hawken. I had been shooting the mini's in the sharps. So I decided I'd try the mini's in the hawken and couldnt believe the accuracy. They weren't on top of each other but they were all in the black at 100 yards. I normally shoot a patched round ball.

Well guys....based upon what the Rdnck informed me of this morning.....I'm sending this rifle back tomorrow! I wasn't exactly pleased with the way the lock plate fit to the wood and when the Rdnck informed me this AM that on page 2 of the TOTW site there was a left-handed Great River rifle for sale in .54 cal. I called TOTW back and told them to hold that rifle for me and I was sending the one they had already shipped back! I haven't seen that rifle yet...and won't because I will send the boys at TOTW a few more $$$$ and get the other rifle the Rdnck informed me of! That rifle has a Ron Long lock system and being as how Bill has experience with the Great River rifle....I don't think I've done anything but better my position! I'll post photos of the dude when I get it! This won't be my first experience with a ML rifle as 40 years ago I bought a Thompson Center rifle in .45 caliber and it shot pretty well but I know a helluva lot more about blackpowder now than I did in those days!
