Roller Barrel Sights
Am having a 50-70 built up on an original sporting action and wood. Considering a MVA Rough and Ready sight but realize that there are some shortcomings with this type. Ironically there were a lot of originals in Marcots book with both RR and buckhorn barrel sights. Thats too busy for me but am considering just going with buckhorns. Problem is that Remington sights are pretty scarce and there appears to be two types. One of them resembles the old Winchester buckhorn so I wonder if it would be an acceptable substitute?

I've thought about the MVA Rough & Ready sight too but for me that means using it as a peep sight only. That's too close to my eye to use as an open sight. I still might try it. About the open sights, it looks like more than only two types were used by Remington. And sights get changed so I'd say it will be very acceptable for you to use a Winchester style of sight on your roller. When you get it done, show us some pictures. Shoot sharp, Mike

Like Mike said so many different ones were used that some thing like the Winchester wouldn't look strange at all. Since you say it's a sporting action is the tang D&T?

Im just going by what I see Remington offered but you're right in that there are many types as shown in Marcots book. The receiver has not been D&T and the action is very clean and crisp. It was originally a 32rf and has the SST. Its being fitted with a heavy 28 in barrel

That should be a fun rifle. Will this be a hunting rig? I ask beacause of your choice of sights.

My roller has a blade front and a Smith rear buckhorn sight. Works good out to about 300 yds.

50-70 would be a great round for plinking and hunting. Should be a lot of fun when you get it back.
