RE: My wife's first day
My sentiments exactly. Which is why I'm off to varying some loads and wrinkling some bullets.

RE: My wife's first day
There are lots of ladies in these days that have become intensely interested in learning to shoot probably at least partly a result of the increased crime levels. For my wife it happened about a week before Obama got inaugurated the first time, and she was dead serious about her desire to have her own guns, learn to shoot good, and go to matches. Enthusiastic encouragement from me really through gas on the fire. A few ladies have asked me about firearm ownership at times, and I tell them it's a great sport and they do double duty; sport and protection, and it's their choice. From the protection standpoint, if you ever accidentally get in a spot where seconds count the police will probably only be minutes away.
Anyway, my wife loves shooting her pistols; air pistol, .22 rimfire and .45 ACP. She really likes loading her own ammo, cleaning her guns, going to the range, etc. I would like to see her shooting rifles, but I'm certainly not going to tamper w/ something that's already working.
Regards
IR

RE: My wife's first day
That was my concern, that according to her earlier/original interest (9mm) she'd be inclined toward handgun, which interests me not at all (in the semi-/ self-defense / fear aspect). That bein said, maybe we'll explore some single action (Vacquero? Quick draw?) shootin down the road. But in all honesty, I hope we've avoided the "black gun" phenom altogether, apologies to any who lean that way. I'm simply about the sporting and try to remind people that it's what birthed the NRA. To whit, thanks to Mike for sending along this

Cheers
p.s. As an interesting aside...I went to Costa Rica after law school, to wash my head out. Went to the Nicaragua border to live at Witche's Rock near Ollie's point. Before I got to the reservation I passed a weekend in the cattle town nearby and was befriended by 3 generations of a family sharing the one-bedroom unit next to mine. They asked me if I'd buy some vodka for an evening. I went across to the store for it, and from behind the counter the "more respectable" store owner asked me, "Is this for them?" I said it's for us. Next thing I knew there was a switch blade at my throat--"They'll cut you" he said. "Fine," I said. Just lemme get the hell away from you! That nite we drank on the sidewalk, all 11 of us. They only had 2 chairs, one for the matriarch, and the other for me. Nuff said.

RE: My wife's first day
Laowho,
Some years ago I wanted to buy my wife a "black gun" in .223 mostly so I would have one in that caliber. (I have a .308). She took one look at them and said "Those are just too ugly". I showed her a Ruger mini-14 and she said "That will do fine." After our buffalo hunt, she said she wants to go pig hunting with me and shoot a feral hog. We are going to the range this week and I will introduce her to my 44-77 Shiloh 3 band military rifle. Both my daughters have their CC/self defense revolvers but they like to shoot my Colt SAA .45LC just for fun. My oldest bought one for herself she likes it so much. They both can drive tacks with mine. I have tried to introduce my family to all kinds of shooting so they will be exposed to everything so they can find out what works for them and then really enjoy it. (one exception - my S&W 500 revolver: not for everybody)

RE: My wife's first day
Funny. I'd been eyeing the Ruger Bisley for maybe a year. Just beautiful those Colt Army repros. I hope we get around to those some day. Also oddly enough, tho we began this current adventure with the son in mind, he has yet to make it to the range but the daughter has expressed interest. We talked about it last nite walking the dogs, and laughed that we'll probably end up leaving the guns to her! Sorry for the above digression--I have a knee-jerk reaction to prioritizing guns according to self-defense and fear. Cheers, Doug

RE: My wife's first day
Laowho - Agreed self defense first. When my wife and I were newly married, she expressed concern for her safety when getting off work late at night at the hospital. There had been a few incidents in her hospital parking lot at night and there were lockdowns when Child Protection Service would order newborns taken from drug parents and make the nurses hand them over to CPS. Of course the nurses got blamed by the parents who went to their car for a gun. Hence the lockdown so they couldn't get back in the hospital. I suggested my wife get a concealed carry permit. She had never shot a gun before, so I was smart enough to send her to a real course at the local gun range and let her learn the basics without me breathing down her neck. We went to the range after she qualified and pretty soon I was asking her, "Honey, what am I doing wrong?" Her groups were that good. She is lethal with a .38/357 revolver. She has never been squeamish about carrying a gun - she doesn't intend to be a victim. We've got the self-defense covered, so now we are into the fun stuff of which the BPCR shooting is keeping me busy. Hopefully "us" busy like you and your wife. My wife really enjoyed our buffalo hunt and thought it was very appropriate to use a black powder Sharps.

RE: My wife's first day
That's incredible Fog. Talk about your perfect storm of catastrophes. If it had been the opening backdrop to a movie I might have turned it off for bad writing as just too contrived to be realistic. Good for her. Yeah, looks like I'm gonna be relegated to loading and casting and spotting (one more thing to learn), and to carrying and cleaning for now. She actually took today off so we can go to the range.

RE: My wife's first day
Speaking of which...She took the day off to shoot, in the rain and win. We had the entire range to ourselves, and the range director just told us we were on our own. Got my @$$ handed to me again. Had her try some Ly125s that I just finally cast, and then some Saeco 645s. Wind down range really gusts every which way. Didn't seem to bother her much tho. First she said she didn't like the lighter 645s, but after consecutively putting 7 in the 10 ring and 1 dead center bull, she said it was ok. On the way home she said, "I really like that rifle."

RE: My wife's first day
Took my wife to the range with my 44-77 Shiloh 3 band Mil rifle (and yes I actually saw an original in that caliber at an auction). She had no problem with recoil (the Galazan pad helped) but we are getting older now and the eyes are changing. She doesn't care for the buckhorn and blade. That turns out to be a good thing because now I have a great reason to put an MVA full length scope on my 45-70 Sporter #1. I have thought about it before but now I will - she will like trying that out and I will use it for scoped competitions. I have another rifle for iron sight competition so I won't have to take off the scope for iron sight shooting.
