.38-50 Hepburn

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Big Grin The closest I ever got to a 8 pin is a 6 Big Grin

I was hoping to use the .38 at Lodi but I see the pit safety rules change have made it impossible unless this is a mistake, so it's out.
For the .38 they now have the minimum weight at 408 (365) -400 min velocity at 1300 (1375) -1275 fps
The reason a dog has so many friends is because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

I just looked at the match flyer again and the power factor for .38 caliber is 355 grain minimum at 1275 fps. I don't remember what weight bullet you're currently working with.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Word on the street is that Rick just won the scope portion of the championship with his 38-50. Waiting for confirmation.

It is official. Rick won Irons and Scope NRA National shoots with the lowly 38-50. Hopefully the rest of us can do it justice!

They are 371 gr at the moment. Big Grin
I just checked my E Mail and I see Cliff sent an update and a 355 gr at 1275 fps is listed in the update so I'm well in this range at 371 gr at 1374fps.
The first flyer I got was this.

Again, Cliff has modified the minimum specs since he has been playing with his 38-50
GOOD for him. I am looking to trying my 38-50 at the 6x1000 at Lodi next month.
I just wish he would "correct" the specs for the 40 calibers. I have proven that my 371 grain E-Mini and my 374 grain DDEPP at 1375 work safely out to 1K. Years back, I had shot the high score for the day at Lodi with my 40-65/16 twist and these bullets.
Kurt, I am looking at shooting your 371359E bullet at least a couple of the strings. My 9+1 COWW/lino alloy bullets from your mold
weigh in at 357 grains. Very close to those with your 18+1 alloy.

Arnie, I changed the alloy a little to the harder side trying to get this lot of Swiss printing better holes through paper and it has reduced the groups a little but I gave up trying to get this lot to shoot a group under 3" @ 200. I put better than 200 rounds down range with this .38 and quit burning primers that are in short supply.
I Doug out some old 1.5 Olde Eynsford and used it yesterday and again this morning to verify the results;ts I had yesterday using it and again it shot very well this morning, better than yesterday.
Zero wind this morning so no problems with wind drift.
I should have shot a fouler instead just wiping the oil out of the barrel I think this is why the first shot went low or it was just me with a pore letoff.
I have shot several groups like those below in the past with the old lot but I will park this lot for a spell and see how it works in the larger capacity shells a little later.

Kurt,
Those groups look good. I see we both have the "loose flyer" problem in shooting test groups....
I know I have to work at my consistancy in my hold, shoulder pressure and trigger let off/follow thru.
Saturday will be a good opportunity to work on test loads at longer distance- 300,600, with No Pressure.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Alma Michigan silhouette match was humbling for me using the .38-50.

This was my first silhouette match using the .38-50 Hep and it went very bad for me. I don't know if I let this new shooter down or what happen, but I have never shot scores as low as I did last weekend.

On Saturday it rained and it was dark for me and with no wind to clear the heavy hanging smoke it made it tough for the spotter to see hits on the lay downs. Sunday was a nice day and my scores should have been good but I shot worse than on Saturday. Both days I shot just as many chickens then I did pigs.

I did not use the last lot of Swiss because I just cant get the accuracy using it than I did with the last lot so I puled out the OE 2F and 1.5F and the 1.5F shot a very consistent 1-3/4" to 2-1/2" 10 shot groups at 200 so I loaded the shells using it.

On Friday getting sight settings I shot 43 rounds sitting off sticks and just missed 4 total after finding the swinger 10 shots each. I thought man this will work Big Grin Well I failed this rifle big time once the game began. I can see doing this in the dark conditions with my bad vision but on Sunday it went worse with conditions that I could see pretty well but shot worse.

More work to be done, but I had a good time with friends I just seen once this year. It was a 736 mile round trip well worth it spending time with them.
