It's been the same here. It can't dry up, mud or ice seem to be the choices. We can't have 2 days of good weather back to back. Each good day is followed several days of crap.
I did shoot yesterday in the wind, but I don't want to talk about it!

I pulled my Spiles in the first of march this year. I still had a lot of Syrup from last year and the year before.
This year the syrup is very good.
The Maples started very late this year here also.

28/1 is something I never seen down here.
I lost count with mine I think it was close to 40/1 maybe even give or take a little.
What is your final cook down temp?
I pull off at 225º that'll makes it a good thick syrup before turning into rock candy

Ah yes! Beautiful isn’t it?
We’ve often had that kind of ratio on the first cooks of the season. Not sure why but I suspect the sugar content is the highest at that time. After the first couple cooks the ratio goes right around 40:1 which is the normal rule of thumb.
We use a hydrometer so I can’t tell you what the temp is.
There are four of us who get together every spring to make syrup. We cook 80 gallons of sap for a batch. We have a wood fired cooker and finish on a propane burner.
It’s a great thing to do after a long winter.

3” more here today. Not unusual for here, I guess. Gettin’ old though! I remember going to a match in Eau Claire on the last weekend of April and shoveling a foot of snow off the 600 yard firing line.
Cooking our last batch of maple syrup tomorrow. Sap is still running but we have enough for another year.

The ground was white here yesterday and again this morning also.
Those matches at Eau Claire, are they the period offhand Schuetzen type matches or what are they?
I know that they used to shoot the Schuetzen and some dressed in the in the period.
