Paper Patch question

RE: Paper Patch question
Rick I'd love to try my hand at long range. As far as I can tell, no one up here shoots BPTR on paper within 2000 miles of me. We do have gong match though. I suppose I could drive to the U.S.A. for a few matches but I worry about bringing rifles across the border.

Dean I have to admit that I haven't tried anything less than 2 damps and a dry, but I will.

Chris.

RE: Paper Patch question
I use "soluble cutting oil" about 8 to 1 with tap water and squeeze them between wood blocks with a small c-clamp -----they end up "just barely damp"-----------i really think the lube cookie is keeping the fouling nice and soft letting the wiping patch work pretty well !!!!

long range is fun----i had 10 rounds left after the match and my spotter clanged the buffler ---821 yards repeatedly --it was a hoot for sure.

going to work up a lube cookie mold and so keep that component well controlled------i had more verticle than normal------------thinking the lube wad variabilty and the inconsistent patch position didn't help any.

Hope to improve at the next match

RE: Paper Patch question
You'll do better scrapping the lube cooky and going with those dry lubed felt wads, or just a couple of card wads.
Olde Eynsford powder makes patched shooting really an easy fouling control deal..

RE: Paper Patch question
Hey Don-------i have the felt just need to punch em out and load with lube----------thats part of the wad experimentation Smile

Other wad stacks will get testing as well-----------i'm only on the 2nd iteration of the load----further work will let me understand more Smile

RE: Paper Patch question
Additional study has revealed that some folks are lubricating the patched bullet after seating it in the case, i'm wondering the reason for this ??

Were the original Sharps bullets lubricated this way ?

Don i believe you are using JoJoba oil/wax for this-----------i have found references that others use Johnsons paste wax and one gentleman using Vasoline.

I'm setting up for testing silhouette loads this saturday, this will be the third load iteration, and wonder if i should include some lubed patches in the testing

Thanks in advance

RE: Paper Patch question
Dave applying spermicetti to the patch is right straight from the instructions that Remington gave in their 1875 catalog. As we can't get Spermicetti anymore jojoba oil is the next best thing to replace it.
Simply put a drop on your finger and wipe it on the exposed portion of the seated patched bullet, and wipe of the excess with a cotton rag.
Sometimes it really make a patched load stand up and pay attention other times it might take a purt neart good load and turn it into a real sneezer.

RE: Paper Patch question
Ok Don------------so positive things can happen with the addition of lube to the patch--------------and its period correct,
(i don't have the reference library you and others have to research this kind of stuff and appreciate the feedback !!!!!!!)

Do we have any ideas about what physical results was Remmington trying to achieve, were they solving some particular problem ?

Is it just a 1870's marketing hype -------------- a way to reduce barrel wear due to the paper patch ?-----an accuracy variable relative to the particular rifle, like different brands of primers ?

Thanks for your patience

RE: Paper Patch question
Dave not everything you can lubricate a patch with is good. What ever you use can not interfere with the integrity of the patch. Anything with grease or oil in it should be avoided like the plaque.

RE: Paper Patch question
Not marketing hype. It was what they determined was necessary for good shooting. Remington did not load a grease cookie or a wad ,the way Sharps did.

RE: Paper Patch question
Thanks Don---------------i had come to believe that anything that would reduce the strength of the paper would be detrimental--------------JPW and Vasoline seems not the best options.

I'll stop by the local nutrition center and pick up a small bottle Jojoba oil and run a test of the best performing load both patchlubed and dry and see what happens Smile

Thanks for the insight
