Back action locks surely don't reinforce a stock wrist. It looks like the degredation in that area is from wood shrinkage/drying with subsequent destruction due to recoil and accumulation of crud. The checkering is called flat checkering and is typical of checkering up to about 1880 or a bit earlier. Bolster, lock and tang look ariginal but the tang looks like something was soldered on top of it; perhaps a sight base. The bore diameter suggests that it was a small game rifle that would also kill a deer. A .375 ball would kill deer back before they grew armor plating. Interesting old rifle.

Hi Dan:

Thanks for the feedback !!!!

The other opinions so far are that the lock is actually for a shotgun and thats its not original to the rifle, but again thats conjecture.

Your exactly correct on the stock---------broken and punky behind the bolster and tang and lock.

I did some light cleaning and de-gunked things and i don't really see any damage that would prevent bringing it back to life, i have the materials and equipement to build a new stock.

Cleaning the barrel shows sharp rifling and a tight patched jag pushes smoothly the length of the tube so it looks like thats not a problem.

When i get approved oer on longrifles perhaps i can find out more

Keep well and stay safe

Your rifle looks like it might have come from western PA or eastern OH. The barrel has definitely been lined and the rib shortened ; no big deal. The name underneath the barrel may have originally been on top before the barrel was lined, or not....I' ll go through some books and see if I can come up with anything.
