RE: Why?????
Don,

It was the lighter 477 grain prolate. The 500 gr elliptical also had some problems that I don't want to use it yet out to the 1K. They all stayed on the 805 yd Buffalo pretty much. The 500 gr elliptical was better then the then the 477 gr prolate.
The 500 grain is slower right at 1400 fps but the 477 gr was doing 1530 fps. Both at that velocity with a 1/16 ROT is spinning fast enough that it should be stable but that long nosed 477 grain is probably at maximum elevation during it's trajectory when it breaks back into subsonic and I think that it goes nuts at this point especially when the wind is feeling it's oats.
Those bullets did the same thing shot with the .44-90bn. Shot tight inside 200 yards but at 600 yards they would not stay on a 4' iron plate but the 90bn has a 1/19 ROT.
Right now I'm loading up for Lodi and I'm using the old dead guys bullets. I know they fly straight and if the final score is low the fault lies with the guy behind the butplate.
