RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Well I bit the bullet and placed the order yesterday.
It is as it is and will be then the fun begins.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Kurt, the only problem I have had with my 38/50's(including the one I sold to Arnie) is the Winchester brass is .001 thicker in the neck, but if you are shooting PP, not a problem.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Thanks, Hiwall55,
I will have to check on forming some 38-50s from WW 3040s.
It may be a better fit for my 371360E patched bullet. The RP formed brass
I got from you with the rifle is a bit loose in the neck.
Kurt,
It may be that was fortunate you got the WW brass.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Bill,

This .38-50 Rem Hep has been an interesting ride so far finding dies plus with all shortages for components like brass. I did manage to find .30-40 Krag Win brass at a fair price of $27/50 Hornady is none existent and Rem is discontinued. I managed to get 500 cases with the same lot. Man some places they are asking $3. plus a case for fired mixed cases.

I annealed a few and used some unique powder and filled 5 cases with Cream of Wheat and fired them in my .40-70 to see if that load would blow the neck and shoulder out and it did in fine shape. The cases looked like they were made straight wall, no wrinkles. The case necks are thicker and run a very consistent .012"+- a 1/2 thousand I'm well pleased with that.
I can see that fired in the .38 -50 chamber all will be well. and I don't think a die will be needed for sizing.
I called all the die manufactures for a taper crimp and sizing die and all gave the thumbs down except Dave at CH-4-D but he could not give me a time frame when he would tool up for it.

I'm going to make a reamer print for a taper crimp die as soon as I get a chamber print for the ordered rifle then I will have PT&G make a taper crimp reamer for this caliber so I can make my own die.

Arnie has been very helpful with information with this project. Arnie gave me two bullets he uses but for the life of me I misplaced them or the cat found them to play with. Big Grin

Kurt,
I will cast some with the "new" 371345E mold soon as I get the mold.
Then, You will have some more of the bullets soon in the mail...
And a fire formed case.

Hiwall55, I will send for the die after I have some more cases to do.
I will indeed be doing the fire forming as you had described , but then
may wish to run them thru the die after that
Thanks
Arnie

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
I bought a 12 twist GM barrel last year along with a reamer. Friend of mine was supposed to put it on my cpa but he is just really busy but after our shoot this weekend I am sending it all to cpa so that i can start playing with it. I was fortunate to find remington brass a while ago and bought 500 pieces. I should have grabbed more but that will get things started

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Well ,guess I'll have to take the 40/60 Maynard barrel off and put the 38/50 barrel on the CPA. Been on the 44 caliber kick for a couple of years.
Arnie, I think I will get few a of those 38 PP bullets. Bill
