.38-50 Hepburn

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Ian,
That was a good hit too.

I will say a 26 and 28 is still a good days finish. For me anyway. Big Grin

Before I started shooting the .40-65 at silhouettes I read some mention that the .40-65 would ring rams. I have never seen this happen with me but my thought was maybe some of the hard alloy would fragment when it hits iron would reduce the inertia that a softer bullet would remain it's weight more flattening just flattening out that the hard alloy won't.
I loaded some with a mix of ww at #1 Lyman and some with 1/18 and shot at rams and none just rung them but some fell slower .
At Alma some of the rams will drop when the winds kick up but it's hard to say for sure with the comparison I made with the two different alloys. But going down the turkey line and alternating shots hard and soft and going down to reset them the turkey hit with the soft bullets were by average farther from the rail then the hard alloy.
But again the some of those critters you almost have to clamp down to make them stand up Big Grin

Interestingly,
Back in my days of Handgun Silhouette,
I found that my 9+1 COWW/Lino bullets seemed to take down the rams
better if I had previously Heat Treated the bullets.

I have a few weeks before my next match with this rifle so I think I will test some more stuff on paper

Before that though I will shoot the Creedmoor this weekend down at oak ridge. Going to use my 16 twist 4-70 Shiloh for that though. Might have some shell shock for a few days after spending so much time with this 38 ?

I hope they fly as good as they look.
I wonder how Don is doing in the desert? I think Zacks match is running down there this week.
I hope to make my first match of this season at Alma next month.

Thats some very tidy looking paper patching right there. Clearly, I need to work on my 'presentation'. I'm still finding the dd bullets a tricky balance to wrap consistently. But...as always; a work in progress !

I have been seeing some of his posts on FB and it looks like he is enjoying himself. Saw a picture of a great big steak that he was about to eat and it looked really good
